I’m one of those sensitive souls who has been despairing easily and frequently at the State Of Things, since I was about eight years old. The more aware I became, the more I despaired. Right now, it’s easy to feel that Things are worse than ever.
I know that I don’t speak only for myself when I say that this is not the world we expected, the world we hope for everyday, or the world we want to leave behind. To survive the harsh realities, we each find our own ways to muddle through and do our best.
I’ve always tried to forge ahead, with anguish and sorrow in one palm, hope and resolve in the other.
We must go on, we must keep making things and showing up, in whatever way we can.
So, I made a Thing to support you on that journey.
The antidote to despair is creativity and connection.
It’s expressing ourselves authentically.
It’s using our voices for what matters.
It’s not being afraid to stand up for a better future — for ourselves and for everyone else.
It’s finding deep connection with others, so that we’re not so alone on this journey.
Imagine what it would be like to wake up each day with a spark, an idea, a yearning, and to follow it regardless of the inner nay-sayer who gets in your way of actually doing what you want to do.
What would it be like to have the courage to share that work, without overthinking, without the self-inflicted torment, without feelings of shame and not-good-enough-ness?
What might it feel like to show up for yourself, for your creativity, without the dread of:
comparing yourself to others who are more successful, making more money, getting more opportunities, getting luckier than you (all by your estimation) and the clammy, oppressive feeling of envy that comes with it
checking and refreshing your subscriber count, your follower count, likes and comments, and either feeling elation when those numbers are ‘performing well’, followed invariably by deflation when your next posts don’t hit the dizzying heights (which is bound to happen)
hearing the voice of your worst enemy of all (yourself) asking you why you’re not performing better, why you washed the dishes instead of doing what you want to do, only to then tell you that you’re not good enough when you actually DO take action
ALL of which are sure-fire ways to pour a glass of water on the flame of your unique creative spark.
I truly believe that deep down inside of every last one of us are glowing, hot embers of talent, dreams and visions, but they usually get stifled and dampened down.
My raison d’être is to add some kindling to those glimmers, to support and guide you along the way to uncovering and fanning that flame, until it becomes a roaring fire.
What might happen when we feed that flicker with a calm flow of oxygen and stimulation?
