Gosh, I do need to rest! But I find it so hard; my inner instructions are very against it

I so know how you feel. I can take time off and rest (reading or watching rubbish or not doing much at all), but the kind of real, deep rest? Where I'm not still thinking of all the things, or wishing I was ticking things off my list... that's much harder!

I love that Robert - my inner instructions are against it. I wonder if, many years from now, our culture will have an established norm of nourishing rest that has become part of our inner operating instructions? That would be awesome (although it’s not likely to happen in my lifetime)!

Thank you for this piece Donna and Tamzin. I miss being mindful and more focused on me. The project-doer in me is stronger. I think of others before I think of myself. The meditation technique you mentioned sounds terrifying to me. That's why I should try it I think 😉

Haha Sylwia, I know exactly what you mean. When something feels terrifying I often know it's a signal. I'm a project doer as well so have found I must sit quietly in the morning, sometimes meditating but not always. If I don't do it before my day starts then I'm off running on the 'list' and can easily veer out of being mindful.

It's so normal, especially for women, to always be putting others ahead of ourselves. It sometimes takes constant reminding to look after ourselves too. Do let us know if you try that meditation technique, I'd love to hear about your experience!

Thanks to both of you for your wise words. Like Donna, I read and write to understand myself and the world better. I journal daily and publish my “Changing Lives” newsletter (https://wendigordon.substack.com) weekly.

At home, I calm my anxious mind by tapping and by listening to Bruce Springsteen. Walking at a local park and photographing the great blue herons, rabbits, flowers, and sunsets I see there also works wonders. I’m currently creating an ebook that combines my nature photos with encouraging words. And I also share the photos online at https://wendigordon.redbubble.com.

Wendi, I love that you use tapping and Bruce to calm your mind. Those are both excellent tools!

This was lovely to read! Meditation helps me so much to stay present and also helps me with my breathing. I noticed I have a tendency to subconsciously hold my breath, it is something that I have to notice and then breathe normally 🌿

Oh I think the majority of us are doing that without being aware of it! I think our screens etc too make it so easy to be holding our breath and not at all aware of our bodies…

As Tamzin said this is very common. I work with people in pain at my job and I am constantly teaching them not to hold their breath because it will accentuate the discomfort. It's fascinating that us adults need to be taught to exhale!
